This Victorian nest of five tables dates from the nineteenth century and is formed from mahogany in a warm brown timber colour. The set comprises five graduated tables that stack neatly together, each constructed with rectangular tops, moulded edges, slender ring-turned vertical supports, and curved trestle feet joined by lower stretcher bars. In a modern home, this versatile ensemble works effectively placed beside a sofa or chair in a living room, ready to be separated when extra surface space is needed for drinks or books. The tables display a consistent dark polished wooden finish across all members of the nested configuration.

A nest of tables consists of a set of graduating accent tables designed to fit neatly stacked beneath one another to preserve floor space. Introduced in the late eighteenth century by cabinetmakers such as Thomas Sheraton, sets were traditionally crafted in suites of three to five tables.

Authentic nineteenth-century nesting tables are predominantly constructed from solid mahogany, rosewood, or satinwood with thin moulded tops. Framing incorporates slender turned or faux-bamboo legs, mortise-and-tenon joinery, and curved trestle feet connected by low stretchers for stability.

Authentic period examples feature hand-cut joinery, subtle timber shrinkage, and natural friction wear along the inner leg channels where the tables slide together. Original pieces also display consistent oxidation beneath the tabletops and hand-finished patination on the turned wooden supports.

Individual tables can be separated across a seating area to provide surface space for drinks, books, or task lighting during gatherings. When stacked, the compact group sits beside a modern sofa or armchair, offering structural contrast to upholstered contemporary furniture.

Maintain surfaces by dusting regularly with a dry microfiber cloth and applying beeswax polish annually along the timber grain. Keep the tables positioned away from radiators and direct sunlight to prevent timber warping, joint loosening, or finish fading.
