Originally designed in the late eighteenth century by Thomas Sheraton and widely produced throughout the nineteenth century, sets of nesting tables were known as quartetto tables when sold in sets of four. They were designed to provide flexible surface area for tea, embroidery, or reading while storing compactly when not in use.

Victorian examples were primarily crafted using dense hardwoods such as Cuban or Honduran mahogany, rosewood, or walnut. Tops often featured figured wood veneers with solid mahogany frames, slim turned legs, and stretchers for structural stability.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-turned spindle uprights, natural wood grain variations, cut-nail or traditional joinery construction, and weight indicative of solid timber. Look for subtle wear on the sliding runners beneath each table top where they rest together.

Position the set beside a sofa or reading armchair to provide modular surface space when hosting guests. The tables can be tiered partially outwards to create dynamic layers for displaying books, ceramics, or lamps.
