What Are Sewing Tables?
Dealers use "work table" and "sewing table" for the same object, and "work" turns up in two of every five titles on Sellingantiques, often alongside the category name in the same line. The form came in during the later 18th century as a small piece of parlour furniture, with a divided drawer or a suspended silk bag for materials, and stayed in production right through the 19th century.
The version you're most likely to meet is a 19th-century English veneered table on a pedestal or turned support. Mahogany, walnut and rosewood are almost exactly tied across the archive, and the dating splits between Victorian, which covers a third of titles, and Regency. Burr figure is called out often enough to be a theme, nearly all of it burr walnut.
Two branches recur strongly. Victorian burr walnut examples, frequently on a flared trumpet column with an octagonal or circular lifting top, make up roughly a quarter of the category. Regency and William IV rosewood and mahogany work tables account for close to a fifth, and many of those carry drop flaps or a Pembroke frame.
A good number double as something else. One in ten is also a games table, with chess, draughts, backgammon or cribbage boards and sometimes a fold-over top, and titles regularly list sewing alongside lamp, side, occasional or writing use. A separate strand is the cast-iron treadle sewing-machine table, about a dozen titles in all, sharing the name but a different object.
Where The Range Splits
Timber and figure do most of the sorting. Burr walnut, amboyna, birds-eye maple, pollard oak, burr elm and yew cluster at the upper end, and the highest-placed piece in the archive is inlaid with specimen wood veneers. Plain oak, pine-topped and bamboo tables sit at the bottom, and the iron treadle machine tables sit below them again.
Decorative work lifts a table from there. Inlay is named in dozens of titles, marquetry in a smaller run, and brass-inlaid rosewood, Tunbridge mosaic, parquetry, penwork and mother-of-pearl all show up on the better-placed pieces. Tables finished on all four sides, described as freestanding, sit almost entirely in the upper half.
Function and period pull in the same direction. Combination pieces that fold or convert for games, chess, writing or reading recur through the top half, while Edwardian and later revival copies sample below Georgian and Regency originals in comparable timber. An attribution to a known cabinetmaker moves a table sharply upward, though the great majority carry no maker at all.

- Work table
- The period name for a sewing table, used interchangeably with it throughout the archive. Dozens of listings hedge and use both words together.
- Fitted interior
- The compartmented, lidded or drawer-divided space for threads, reels and sewing tools. It is the feature that makes the table a work table rather than a side table.
- Trumpet
- A tapering, flared column support beneath the box, common on Victorian walnut examples and named in eighteen titles.
- Burr
- Veneer cut from a knotty growth on the tree, giving swirled, dense figure. Called out in eighty-six titles, seventy-nine of them burr walnut.
- Pembroke
