Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1920s:
Draw-leaf extension mechanism: construction developed for dining tables from the late nineteenth century onward.
Wishbone floor stretcher: distinctive interwar interpretation of earlier architectural table bases.
Carved grapevine frieze: decorative relief typical of early twentieth-century revival oak furniture.
Even surface patination over solid oak: consistent with a century of light domestic use.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This oak Jacobean style refectory dining table dates from 1920. It is finished in a dark brown tone that highlights the warm grain of the timber. The rectangular top includes draw-leaf extensions at both ends, supported by substantial ring-turned legs and a shaped stretcher rail base. The side rails display detailed carving of grapes and trailing vines. The table stands 76 cm high, 328 cm wide, and 91 cm deep when fully extended, with a closed width of 211 cm. Designed for everyday family dining and formal entertaining, this table seats up to ten guests when fully extended. It suits a traditional or country-style interior, bringing an English Country House aesthetic to a dining room. The piece offers a robust and architectural appearance with practical extension mechanisms for varied seating requirements.

A Jacobean style refectory table is characterized by solid timber construction, typically in oak, featuring low-relief carved decorations along the frieze, heavy turned baluster legs, and floor-level stretcher rails for stability.

These tables are traditionally constructed from solid oak using mortise and tenon joinery. Draw-leaf mechanisms, turned legs, and hand-carved friezes displaying geometric or foliate patterns are primary structural elements.

Original 17th-century Jacobean tables exhibit irregular hand-planing marks, peg construction, and uneven wear along the stretcher rails. 19th and 20th-century Jacobean Revival pieces show more uniform saw marks, modern fixings beneath the frame, and standardized draw-leaf runner systems.

Dark oak refectory tables offer substantial visual weight and can be balanced in contemporary interiors by pairing them with streamlined upholstered dining chairs, neutral wall tones, and modern pendant lighting.

Oak furniture should be kept away from direct heat sources and excessive moisture. Regular application of a high-quality beeswax polish preserves the timber patina and protects the carved surfaces from dust accumulation.
