This nineteenth-century occasional table belongs to the Grand Regency style and takes the form of a tilt-top tripod table. The piece uses mahogany and parcel gilt materials, presenting a dark brown timber colour with contrasting gold highlights on the carved and decorated sections. The rectangular top has a scalloped, shaped rim with gilt decorative corners and edging, supported by a slender tapering turned column with a leaf-carved knop above downswept cabriole legs. These legs terminate in claw feet and display further gilt carved embellishments. The table stands 69 cm high, 75 cm wide, and 63 cm deep. Such a piece works practically at the end of a sofa in a formal living space or reception room, serving as a display surface or resting place for books and drinks while adding an opulent decorative accent to the interior.

Tilt-top tripod tables became prominent during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries as functional occasional furniture designed for serving tea or displaying items. Their pivoting mechanism allowed the top to fold vertically, enabling the piece to be stored against a wall to conserve floor space when not in use.

These tables were typically constructed from dense hardwoods such as mahogany or walnut, featuring turned central pillars and hand-carved legs secured with dovetail blocks. Details often included hand-applied gilt accents, carved borders, and brass snap-latch mechanisms beneath the tabletop.

Authentic pieces demonstrate hand-carved decorative elements, original brass catch hardware, and natural wear around the swivel block and feet. Look for uneven underside oxidation, hand-planed timber surfaces, and slight irregularities in turned components consistent with period craftsmanship.

Place the table alongside an armchair or sofa as an occasional drink surface, or position it in an entry nook. When not actively used, the top can be tilted upright to showcase the carved grain and gilt work as a vertical decorative feature.

Dust regularly using a dry, soft lint-free cloth, avoiding liquid spray cleaners that can strip gilding or alter historical patination. Protect the timber from direct sunlight and extreme humidity fluctuations to prevent cracking or warping.
