A Mahogany Pie-crust Tripod Table

19th century
Description

Mahogany Pie-Crust Tripod Table, George III Style, 19th Century or Later

An attractive mahogany pie-crust occasional table, the circular top featuring an unusually elaborate, shaped and moulded scalloped border, displaying a beautifully mellow colour and rich, aged patina.

The top is supported on an elegant turned and ring-moulded central column, raised on three finely shaped cabriole legs terminating in pad feet.

Of particularly pleasing proportions, the table has a beautifully decorative outline, with the finely detailed pie-crust edge lending considerable character.

The mahogany retains a warm colour, with surface marks, minor scratches and wear to the polish consistent with age and use.

A charming and versatile occasional table, ideal beside an armchair or sofa, as a lamp table or as an attractive addition to a traditional drawing room or contemporary interior.

Condition: Good decorative condition, with small age-related surface wear.

This George III style occasional table dates from the late nineteenth century and follows an English country house design. The dark brown timber displays a warm colour and a rich, aged patina with visible surface marks and minor polish wear. A circular top with a scalloped, moulded pie-crust rim rests on a birdcage mechanism above a turned central column. Three slender cabriole legs extend downward, terminating in simple pad feet. The piece stands 68 cm high, 61 cm wide and 61 cm deep, offering practical dimensions for everyday placement in a home. In a modern interior, this occasional table functions well beside an armchair or at the end of a sofa. It also suits placement in a traditional drawing room as a lamp table for holding reading lights, small decorative items or daily accessories. The versatile form allows for flexible positioning in a study, library or sitting room while providing a stable display surface on sturdy tripod supports.

First introduced during the eighteenth century in the Georgian era, a pie-crust tripod table is an occasional table defined by a raised, carved scalloped rim around a circular top. It features a central turned pedestal supported by three outward-curving cabriole legs.

Traditional examples were constructed primarily from solid timber such as Cuban or Honduras mahogany, featuring hand-carved scalloped moulding along the perimeter. The base incorporates a turned central shaft connected to cabriole legs via hand-cut dovetail joints, often incorporating a wooden birdcage mechanism allowing the top to tilt and rotate.

Authentic period pieces display hand-saw marks on the underside of the table top, slight asymmetry in turned elements, and original hand-forged catch mechanisms. The presence of timber shrinkage across the grain of circular tops, alongside hand-cut dovetail joints securing the legs into the central pillar, indicates age and construction method.

A pie-crust tripod table functions as an accent piece positioned beside a sofa or armchair to support lighting or books. The dark wood tone provides contrast when placed against light walls or textured upholstery.

Maintain the surface finish by dusting with a dry microfibre cloth and applying clear beeswax polish annually. Position the timber away from direct sunlight, radiators, and sudden humidity fluctuations to prevent warping or joint separation.
