This Georgian occasional table is a tilt-top tripod piece constructed from mahogany with a dark brown finish and a single-piece top. The design includes a circular surface with a tilt-top mechanism, a baluster stem featuring wythen turning on the central pedestal, three splayed cabriole legs, and pad feet. The wood displays a wonderful colour and patina across the timber, alongside an untouched antique condition that includes a historic repair to the underside on the top bracing a crack. Measuring 72 cm high, 82 cm wide, and 83 cm deep, the table fits comfortably into a fireplace alcove as a functional surface. In a contemporary home, this English Country House piece serves well as a side table for drinks or books in a living room, study, or hallway corner. The proportions allow it to sit beside seating while providing a useful top surface that can be tilted upright when floor space is needed. The traditional timber construction and classic tripod base bring authentic period character to domestic interior schemes without dominating the room.

A Georgian tilt-top tripod table is an 18th-century occasional table characterized by a circular top mounted on a hinge mechanism. This mechanism allows the top to tilt vertically when not in use, enabling the table to be stored flush against a wall to conserve room space.

These tables were predominantly crafted from solid Cuban or West Indian mahogany, valued for its dense grain and durability. Construction typically involved a turned central stem supported by three hand-dovetailed cabriole legs, secured with a brass catch or wooden tilt block.

Authentic period examples feature hand-cut dovetail joints on the underside of the tripod legs, original iron or brass tilt latches, and subtle hand-planing marks on the timber. The underside of the wood often exhibits natural dark patination and shrinkage consistent with age.

A tilt-top table functions as a flexible side table beside a sofa or armchair, or positioned in an empty alcove. The top can be left flat to hold lamps and books, or tilted vertically against a wall to display the natural grain of the timber as a decorative background feature.

Maintain the timber surface by regularly dusting with a dry, soft cloth and applying a high-grade beeswax polish once or twice a year. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent shrinkage, cracking, or uneven fading of the natural finish.
