FAQs

A snap top or tilt top table features a hinged tabletop mounted on a central pedestal that rotates vertically when a catch is released. Popular throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, this space-saving mechanism allowed the table to be stored flat against a wall when not in use.

Nineteenth-century tilt top tables were predominantly crafted from solid hardwoods such as mahogany, oak, or walnut. Construction typically involved a turned central pillar supported by three hand-shaped tripod legs joined with mortise and tenon or dovetail joints.

Authentic pieces display period brass or iron latch mechanisms on the underside of the tabletop, alongside evidence of hand-planing on raw timber surfaces. Look for natural wear patterns on the turned column base and original hand-cut wooden dowel or screw fixings.

Position the table beside an armchair or sofa as a compact occasional surface for lamps or reading material. Alternatively, tilt the top upright and place it in an entry space or alcove to display the timber grain as a vertical decorative feature.

Keep the timber away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent warping and timber movement. Dust regularly with a dry, soft cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish occasionally to nourish the wood finish.
