Antique Georgian Period Mahogany Snap Top Occasional Table

19th century
Description

A wonderful original antique Georgian period mahogany snap top occasional table. This was made in England, it dates from around the 1790-1810 period.

This is of superb quality and is a very useful size. The mahogany has acquired a gorgeous colour tone and patina, the top can be tilted up with an original brass catch mechanism. This table sits on a solid mahogany splayed tripod base, it is sturdy and sound.

We have had this revived and re-polished, the condition is excellent for its age. There are various signs of old wear and character, with one minor historical repair to the support under the table top.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A snap top or tilt-top table features a hinged circular surface attached to a central pedestal stem, allowing the top to tilt vertically when not in use to conserve space in 18th-century interiors.

These tables were primarily constructed from solid mahogany, featuring turned timber central columns, brass or iron release catches, and hand-fitted wood joints.

Authentic pieces display hand-cut brass or iron catch mechanisms beneath the top, hand-planed undersides, original hinges, and three legs dovetailed into the base of the central column.

Place the table beside an armchair as an accent drink stand, or set it in a hallway corner with a lamp or ceramic object to contrast historical craftsmanship against contemporary surroundings.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft microfibre cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish twice a year to protect the timber, keeping the piece away from direct radiators and sunlight.
