Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1800s:
Original brass barrel castors with hand-cut slotted screws: early hardware.
Tripod legs dovetailed into the central column block: typical late Georgian joinery.
Solid mahogany tiers with turned dished lips: shaped from single timber planks.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Georgian mahogany dumb waiter from around 1800 combines functionality with traditional English country house style. The piece stands in dark brown polished timber, showing crisp turned baluster stems supporting two graduated circular tiers with moulded tray edges, and rests upon a tripod base with shaped legs and brass castors. Both tiers rotate freely to assist with serving food or displaying items. Measuring 101.5 cm high, 66 cm wide, and 66 cm deep, this practical occasional table fits well in an empty corner of a living room, dining room, or hallway. It functions effectively as a standalone display stand for plants, books, or decorative objects, or as a portable serving station during gatherings.

FAQs

Originating in the 18th century, a dumb waiter is a tiered piece of dining room furniture designed to hold food, dishes, or condiments, enabling guests to serve themselves without servants present.

Georgian dumb waiters were primarily constructed from solid mahogany, featuring turned timber stems, graduated circular trays, and a tripod base fitted with brass castors.

Authentic Georgian examples typically feature hand-turned central baluster columns, hand-carved cabriole tripod legs with pad feet, original period brass castors, and moulded raised rims on the circular trays.

In modern living spaces, a dumb waiter functions effectively as a tiered drinks stand, a display table for decorative ceramics, or an occasional side table positioned in an empty corner.

Regularly dust the timber surface with a clean microfibre cloth and apply a quality beeswax polish once or twice a year, ensuring the piece is kept away from direct radiators or high moisture.
