A bench is the oldest form of seat furniture, a plank or joined board on legs meant to seat several people at table, in a hall, a church or a workshop.
What Are Antique Benches?
Oak dominates the group, named in well over a third of the titles on Sellingantiques, and the hall and monks bench strand is the largest single use. The version you are most likely to meet is a carved oak hall bench or monks bench, often with a seat that lifts to a storage box beneath, dated Victorian through to the 1920s.
The monks bench is the form most consistently named in the whole archive: a hall settle whose hinged back swings down onto the arms to make a table. Despite the name, the dated field puts the bulk of them in the late 19th and early 20th centuries rather than anywhere monastic.
Behind the oak sits a large body of plain country work in pine, pitch pine, elm, fruitwood and chestnut, much of it French, sold as farmhouse, kitchen, tavern and rustic benches. A garden strand runs in cast iron, wrought iron and teak, with occasional stone and faux-bois. Dates read loosely. Only 985 of 2,303 listings carry a clean year, and '19th Century' with a further 288 as 'Victorian' accounts for a great deal of the rest, so treat either as a bracket. Precise decades cluster in the early 20th century. The field runs from 1690 to 1950, with 89 given as 18th Century and only single instances reaching the 16th and 17th.
Where Value Sits
Carving does most of the work in the oak group. 'Carved' appears in 327 titles and 'carved oak' in 236, and the higher-priced oak pieces are the carved ones, with Green Man masks, cherub heads, Gothic and Flemish work named in the titles. Plain joined oak sits below them.
Timber sorts the category almost on its own. Regency and William IV mahogany hall benches and window seats, along with walnut and rosewood, cluster at the top, while plain pine and pitch pine sit at the bottom. Painted country work is the exception that climbs: original paint recurs through the upper half, as does weathered silvered teak in the garden strand.
Then scale and number. Titles that state 6, 8, 9 or ten feet, 2.5 metres or three metres carry more than short benches, and 'large' and 'long' turn up throughout. Pairs are a real habit, offered in 231 titles, and a matched pair or a bench sold with its table sits well above a single.
