Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1930s:
Metal maker's badge inside the well: marks commercial factory production.

Fret-cut scrollwork across the front: clean machine pierced decoration.
Quarter-sawn oak panels: prominent medullary rays, the silvery flecks of oak.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

The monks bench, or settle table, originated in medieval monasteries and residences where space-saving multi-functional furniture was required. The design allowed a single piece to serve as seating, storage, and a tabletop by tilting the backrest forward over the armrests.

Traditional examples are constructed from solid timber using mortise and tenon joinery. Common features include hand-carved decorative panels, turned spindle supports, wood peg fastenings, and a hinged seat lid granting access to an internal storage box.

Authentic period pieces exhibit historical wear on the wooden pivot pins, hand-cut joinery marks, historic iron hardware, and natural patination across high-contact surfaces like the armrests and seat.

A monks bench provides functional seating and concealed storage in entryways, hallways, or boot rooms. It can also be positioned in a dining room or living space as a secondary table or decorative settle.

Solid oak furniture should be dusted regularly with a soft dry cloth and treated periodically with clear beeswax polish to maintain moisture balance. Direct heat sources and damp environments should be avoided to prevent wood movement and joint separation.
