Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This late Georgian mahogany serving tray belongs to the English Country House style and serves as a refined display piece on a sideboard top. The piece employs mahogany, brass, and marquetry inlay, finished in a polished warm brown colour that highlights the natural grain. Distinctive elements include a raised oval gallery rim with a cross-cut edge, a central shell marquetry inlay, and period cast brass handles mounted securely at either end. General usage wear is visible across the polished wooden surface, showing the authentic signs of age typical of period serving trays. The object measures 6 cm high, 66 cm wide, and 20 cm deep, offering a compact proportion suitable for contemporary hospitality or display. In a modern home, this tray functions well on a dining room sideboard, serving drinks during gatherings or holding decorative items in a living room. The combination of warm timber tones and contrasting brass hardware allows the piece to integrate easily into traditional or transitional interior schemes. Daily care involves simple dusting and gentle polishing to maintain the rich finish of the mahogany wood. The sturdy gallery and solid handles provide practical utility while preserving the decorative integrity of the design.

FAQs

Late Georgian trays typically feature refined marquetry inlays, such as central shell motifs, low gallery borders, and solid brass carrying handles. They were designed primarily for serving tea or beverages in 18th and early 19th-century English households.

These pieces were constructed using fine dense mahogany, often accented with boxwood, satinwood, or fruitwood marquetry inlays. Secondary elements commonly include cast brass handles and bentwood or solid gallery edges.

Authentic Georgian trays show hand-cut joining along the gallery, hand-cast brass handles with original fixings, and natural shrinkage on the timber underside. The central marquetry sits flush with the surrounding surface, exhibiting subtle age lines and natural patination.

Position the tray atop an ottoman, coffee table, or sideboard to group decorative items such as glassware, candles, or small ceramics. Its rich timber tones provide warmth and structure to modern minimalist or eclectic settings.

Clean the wooden surface with a soft, dry lint-free cloth and apply high-quality beeswax sparingly along the grain to maintain the finish. Keep the tray clear of direct heat sources, standing liquids, and harsh metal cleaners.
