This Aesthetic Movement oak side table dates from 1890 and brings a distinct English Country House character to interior spaces. The timber displays a rich warm brown tone with natural surface grain variations, wear markings across the flat top surface, and a simple moulded edge following the eight-sided perimeter. Four splayed legs support the surface, each shaped with ring-turned details tapering downward. The measurements are 72 cm high, 56 cm wide, and 56 cm deep. Placement suits practical uses at the end of a sofa or beside an armchair to hold a reading lamp, small books, or a beverage. The compact footprint fits neatly into both traditional living rooms and reception studies where surface space is required without a heavy visual presence.

The Aesthetic Movement emerged in the late nineteenth century as a reaction against industrial mass production, focusing on craft art, geometric forms, and simpler oriental influences. Key design traits include reform principles, dark or stained woods, ring-turned legs, and geometric tabletops.

Tables from this period were predominantly constructed using solid native hardwoods such as oak, mahogany, and walnut. Standard joinery techniques included hand-turned legs, pegged joints, and solid wood top constructions finished with oil or wax polish.

Authentic pieces feature period joinery methods, natural surface oxidisation, age-appropriate wear, and characteristic turnings or incised decoration. Look for uniform grain structures consistent with English or European oak and patinated finishes along working surfaces.

An octagonal side table serves as a functional accent placed beside contemporary seating or within reading nooks. Pairing historical woodwork with modern textiles, minimalist ceramics, or contemporary lighting provides a balanced aesthetic contrast.

Preserve solid oak by applying high-grade beeswax polish annually to maintain moisture balance and protection. Keep the item away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent timber movement, shrinkage, or sun bleaching.
