This Arts and Crafts side table dates from 1900 and is made from solid oak with a warm brown timber colour and a visible grain. The piece takes the form of an octagonal top above an open lower shelf tier of matching shape. Three vertical supports rise from the ground, shaped with decorative bobbin turnings along their height and tapering towards simple pointed feet at the base. The surface displays ink marks on the upper tier, reflecting use and age, alongside good solid construction with firm structural joints throughout. Measuring 70 cm high, 66 cm wide and 66 cm deep, this compact occasional table fits naturally at the end of a sofa or beside an armchair in a living space to hold lamps, books or cups.

The Arts and Crafts movement emerged in the late nineteenth century as a reaction against industrial mass production. It emphasises simple geometric forms, natural timber grains, hand-turned details, and visible joinery over elaborate ornamentation.

Solid hardwoods, predominantly native oak, were favored for their strength and prominent grain patterns. Construction typically incorporated mortise and tenon joints, dowel fixings, and hand-turned spindle or bobbin legs.

Authentic period pieces display age-appropriate patination on surface touchpoints, hand-finished joinery, and inconsistent turnings from manual lathe work. Undersides often show traditional saw marks and natural oxidation patterns.

An octagonal side table functions effectively as an accent piece beside contemporary upholstered seating or within a reading corner. The geometric structure introduces texture and historical contrast alongside clean modern lines.

Dust surfaces regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish twice yearly to preserve the timber finish. Keep the furniture away from direct heat sources and standing moisture to prevent timber movement.
