This early 19th-century Regency wine cooler or cellarette originates from the renowned maker Gillows of Lancaster and follows a classical sarcophagus shape. The piece is constructed from dark brown mahogany, highlighted by prominent flame mahogany veneered panels on the sides, a wide moulded rollover edge, and a dark polished timber finish. Four turned and gadrooned melon-carved feet support the body, complete with concealed brass castors underneath. The interior is fully lead-lined and watertight for practical storage needs. Measuring 50 cm in height, 80 cm in width, and 50 cm in depth, the item fits comfortably as a statement piece in an empty corner of a dining room or living space today. The traditional design and rich wood grain integrate well with period interiors, providing both decorative presence and functional storage for bottles or display use in a traditional British home.

An antique cellarette, or wine cooler, is a decorative wooden receptacle designed during the 18th and early 19th centuries to hold wine bottles and ice during formal dinner service.

Early 19th-century wine coolers were predominantly constructed from dense hardwoods such as mahogany or rosewood, frequently incorporating interior lead or zinc linings to contain ice and protect the exterior woodwork.

Authentic early 19th-century pieces attributed to cabinetmakers such as Gillows feature high-grade flame mahogany veneers, hand-cut dovetail joinery, precise moulding profiles, and occasionally stamped maker marks along timber edges.

An antique cellarette can be positioned in a dining area, hallway, or reception room as a characterful side piece, functioning as a standalone decorative item, planter, or spirits container.

Position the timber away from direct sunlight and artificial heat sources to prevent warping, and apply high-quality natural beeswax polish periodically along the direction of the wood grain.
