This 19th-century William IV sarcophagus-shaped wine cooler is made from rich, warm brown mahogany. The piece stands on short bun feet with original brass castors and features a stepped lift-up lid with a panelled top. Ornate egg-and-dart carving runs along the upper border, complemented by gadrooned mouldings and carved details decorating the front and sides. The interior is fitted with original compartments designed for bottle storage. Measuring 48 cm high, 73 cm wide and 50 cm deep, the cooler is dated to 1830. In a contemporary home, this cellarette functions as a practical storage chest or an accent furniture piece suitable for an empty corner, a living room or a dining space. The warm mahogany tones and classical Regency proportions allow the wine cooler to coordinate easily with traditional or eclectic interior schemes while providing enclosed storage for bottles or household items.

FAQs

Cellarettes and wine coolers from the William IV period (18301837) were designed to house and chill wine bottles in dining rooms. Often shaped as classical sarcophagi, these wooden chests bridged the Regency and early Victorian eras, serving as prominent status symbols for formal entertaining.

These pieces were primarily constructed from solid mahogany or mahogany veneers over oak and pine frames. The interiors were traditionally fitted with lead or zinc linings to retain meltwater from ice, while brass hardware and heavy castors facilitated movement.

Authentic pieces feature architectural shapes, particularly tapering sarcophagus contours, bold hand-carved mouldings such as egg-and-dart or gadrooning, and flame mahogany veneers. Hand-cut dovetail joinery, original drainage spouts, and age-appropriate wear to internal metal linings also indicate period authenticity.

A mahogany cellarette functions well as a statement accent in a dining space, hallway, or living area. Its flat or stepped top offers a surface for display items, while the enclosed structure provides discreet storage for barware or general household objects.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a quality beeswax polish periodically along the grain to protect the timber finish. Keep the item away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent shrinkage, cracking, or fading of the mahogany veneer.
