This Victorian fire screen dates to 1880 and contains a needlework picture dating to 1750. The piece is constructed from carved dark brown mahogany and wool needlework. The design incorporates barley twist uprights, scrolled finials at the top corners, and a pierced carved cresting above the glazed aperture. Intricate openwork carving borders the top and bottom of the embroidered pastoral scene, which depicts figures within a landscape using threads of beige, brown, green, and blue. The framework includes turned barley twist stretchers near the base, terminating in carved feet. Practical dimensions are 108 cm high, 61 cm wide, and 30 cm deep across the feet. This decorative screen belongs by a fireplace hearth in a traditional living room, study, or drawing room to provide warmth shielding or aesthetic appeal during non-heating months.

Victorian fire screens were designed to shield room occupants from the intense heat of open fires while preventing makeup, particularly wax-based cosmetics of the period, from melting. They also served as prominent decorative features in drawing rooms during non-winter months.

Frames were typically crafted from polished hardwoods such as mahogany, rosewood, or walnut, featuring turned or carved details. The central panels commonly displayed wool needlepoint, silk embroidery, beaded textiles, or painted fabric behind protective glass.

Authentic pieces generally feature hand-carved framework with period details like barley-twist columns, pierced crestings, or scroll feet. The reverse side of the panel often displays period mounting techniques, hand-stitched textiles, and natural age-related patina on the timber.

While traditionally placed near an unused fireplace, these screens can be used in modern interiors as decorative freestanding art pieces in hallways, alcoves, or corners to add historic texture and visual interest.

Keep the wood nourished with high-quality beeswax applied along the grain, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners. Ensure textile panels are kept out of direct sunlight to prevent colour fading, and clean glass surfaces carefully to avoid moisture reaching the fabric.
