This Georgian pole screen is made from dark brown rosewood combined with polished brass and wool. The piece stands on melon fluted ball feet below a shaped tripod base with a turned central column. An adjustable vertical brass pole terminates in a spearhead finial at the top. The rectangular needlework tapestry panel features pink and blue floral motifs within a cream ground, bordered by red scrolls and crowned by two lion figures. Dark wood hardware secures the textile panel to its frame. The item measures 137 cm high, 43 cm wide and 33 cm deep overall. Position this screen beside a living room fireplace hearth or reading chair to shield residents from radiant heat, just as originally intended in traditional interiors. The adjustable mechanism allows the needlework panel to slide vertically along the brass pole for height regulation. Place it in a study, library, or drawing room to introduce period character and textile texture to empty corners.

Pole screens were popular hearthside furnishings in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, designed to shield a sitting persons face from direct fire heat while allowing warm air to circulate. The adjustable height enabled customization based on the height of the user or seat.

These screens typically feature fine dense hardwoods such as rosewood or mahogany for the central column and tripod base. The adjustable rod is frequently brass, while the decorative panel contains hand-stitched wool or silk needlework framed in timber.

Authentic period examples display hand-turned wood construction, traditional joinery on the tripod legs, original brass adjustment collars, and genuine hand-worked tapestry or embroidery showing age-appropriate patination.

A pole screen functions as an architectural accent piece when positioned beside a traditional hearth, within a reading nook, or in an empty corner to introduce texture, warmth, and historical detail.

Dust timber elements regularly with a microfibre cloth and apply beeswax sparingly to preserve the rosewood lustre. Keep the textile panel out of direct sunlight to prevent colour fading, and clean it gently with a soft brush or low-suction vacuum using a mesh screen.
