This early Victorian pole fire screen consists of a dark brown rosewood frame, brass hardware, and a needlepoint tapestry panel mounted on an adjustable central column with a tripod base. The textile centrepiece displays a still-life arrangement of blue grapes, red fruit, and pale yellow flowers behind a glass cover, framed by elaborate carved scrollwork along the top and sides. A turned spiral finial tops the upright pole, which is supported by three cabriole legs terminating in carved scroll feet. Measuring 171 cm in height by 53 cm in width and 47 cm in depth, the stand provides a slender vertical profile well-suited to narrow spaces. Placed near a fireplace hearth or in a traditional reception room, it functions both as a decorative accent reflecting English country house style and a functional screen to deflect radiant heat from an open fire.

FAQs

Pole fire screens were hearth accessories in eighteenth and nineteenth-century homes, designed to shield seated individuals from the direct heat of an open fire while protecting delicate facial skin and wax-based cosmetics.

These pieces typically featured dense hardwoods such as rosewood or mahogany, paired with hand-stitched needlepoint, wool, or silk tapestry panels supported by turned wooden poles and tripod bases.

Authentic examples feature original brass adjustment mechanisms on the central pole, hand-carved detailing along the frame and tripod legs, period fixings on the rear panel, and natural patina on the wood surface.

Position the screen beside a non-working fireplace, within a hearth alcove, or in a reading corner to serve as a decorative focal point that introduces historical texture and woodwork to the room.

Keep the item out of direct sunlight to prevent fading of the textile, dust the wood frame with a dry microfibre cloth, avoid applying liquid polishes to needlework, and nourish carved rosewood sparingly with high-quality beeswax.
