Antique Foot Warmers

A foot stove is a small portable box, usually oak, made to hold a pot of embers under a pierced or open top so a seated person could warm their feet indoors, in church or in a carriage.

Introduction

Antique Foot Warmers

Every listing on Sellingantiques in this category uses the words foot stove rather than foot warmer. The object is a lidded or pierced box that held a small earthenware pot of coals, with the feet resting on the top. Domestic heating aids of this sort were in use from at least the seventeenth century and dropped away once central heating arrived.

Five of the six examples currently offered are oak boxes with carving on the top, and one is brass worked up by hand. So the piece you are most likely to meet is a chip-carved oak box: shallow geometric facets cut across the upper surface, sometimes over the sides as well.

Regional attribution runs to the Low Countries throughout. Two titles say Dutch outright, three say possibly Frisian, and no other origin appears. Three of those Frisian listings are near-identical, which is worth knowing when the same wording keeps coming up.

Period is thinner than the objects suggest. None of the six carries a completed entry in the dealer's date field, so dates only appear inside titles: one 19th century, one dated 1901, one dated 1724. The rest are undated, and one dealer's stock accounts for the whole category.

What sets them apart

Range And Grade

Material sets the ceiling. The one brass hand-embossed example stands well clear of the oak boxes in asking price, and it is also the only piece reaching back before the nineteenth century. Oak makes up the body of what is available, and the spread within it is narrower.

After material, it is decoration and a date that lift a box. Chip carving is the defining surface here, named in four of six titles, and it sits above plainer work: the oval example described only as carved on top is at the bottom of the range. Surviving paint helps too, with the partly painted and chip-carved stove grouped with the upper oak examples.

An actual year in the title pulls upward, and so does a named place of origin. The two pieces carrying a year, 1724 and 1901, are among the dearer listings, while the undated oak boxes sit lower. Note that attribution here is hedged rather than fixed, which is why possibly Frisian keeps appearing instead of Frisian.

One oval example is carved on top in what its title calls the style of the typical Turkish Knot. Every other one is described with no plan shape at all.

Terms antiques dealers use

The Antique Foot Warmers Glossary

Foot stove
The term used in every listing in this category: a box holding a pot of embers, with the feet resting on the top.
Chip carving
Shallow geometric decoration cut in small facets with a knife or chisel. It is named in four of the six titles.
Frisian
Of Friesland in the northern Netherlands. It appears as a cautious attribution, phrased possibly Frisian.

Raised decoration worked up from the reverse of sheet metal. The single brass example is described as hand embossed.
Partly painted
Decorative paint surviving over part of the carcase rather than all of it.
Turkish knot
An interlaced carved motif. One oval oak top is described as carved in this style.
Questions people ask

Antique Foot Warmers: Frequently Asked Questions

Why are they called foot stoves and not foot warmers?

Foot warmer is the category heading, but the dealer titles all use foot stove. Both point to the same object: a box for a pot of embers with the feet on top.

If you are searching, the word inside the listings is stove.

What are antique foot stoves made of?

Oak dominates. Five of the six examples on the market are oak boxes, generally with carving worked across the top.

Brass turns up exactly once, hand embossed, and it sits alone at the top of the range.

Where do these foot stoves come from?

The Low Countries, on the evidence of the titles. Dutch appears twice and possibly Frisian three times, with no other origin named anywhere in the category.

Friesland is in the northern Netherlands. The wording stays hedged, so the attribution is offered rather than settled.

How old are the examples on the market?

Dates are scarce. Only three of the six titles carry any period at all: one 19th century, one dated 1901 and one dated 1724.

That 1724 brass box is the only piece reaching back before the nineteenth century, and it gives a dated span of roughly 180 years across the group.

The others are undated in the title and in the dealer's own date field.

What does chip carved mean on these boxes?

Chip carving is shallow geometric decoration cut out in small facets with a knife or chisel, usually covering the top surface.

It is the defining decoration in this category, named in four of the six titles. The one example described simply as carved on top, an oval, is the lowest-priced of the group.

Have many foot warmers sold on Sellingantiques?

No completed sale has passed through the archive in this category, so there is no sold history to read.

Six examples are on the market at once, and they all come from a single dealer's stock.
