Timber dominates. Pine is named in nine of twenty-eight titles, with oak, mahogany and walnut behind it, and the shape you are most likely to meet is a Victorian or later pine surround, plain or painted white. A smaller run comes in marble, slate and stone, and there is the occasional cast-iron combination fireplace where surround, insert and grate are cast as one.
A distinct group pairs pine with gesso, moulded plaster ornament laid over the timber carcass. Four such mantelpieces appear, described as Regency, George III or simply Edinburgh, and Edinburgh is the only city name that recurs in the whole set.

Scale counts, and so does surviving as a set. "Large" recurs in the titles at the upper end, and the only matched pair on Sellingantiques, two Edwardian carved white marble fireplaces sold together, sits near the ceiling of the range. Named authorship pushes higher again, but only one listing in twenty-eight names a hand at all: a large chimneypiece attributed to Sir Edwin Lutyens, and it stands at the very top.
