This pair of early 20th-century English Edwardian brass chimney ornaments depicts King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra as equestrian figures. The gold-coloured cast brass pieces show the uniformed, be-medalled king on horseback and the queen seated side-saddle on her mount, with commemorative lettering above rectangular moulded plinths decorated with pierced scrollwork and symbols representing the four nations of Great Britain and Ireland. Both figures stand on rocky terrain atop heavily ornamented bases that display visible age wear and patina. The dimensions measure 22 cm high, 17 cm wide, and 4 cm deep. Suitable for placement on a mantelpiece or shelf in a gentleman's library or traditional living room, these commemorative mantel ornaments bring historical character to a home interior. They sit securely on flat surfaces as standalone decorative items.

FAQs

Popular during the 19th and early 20th centuries, brass chimney ornaments were cast decorative metal figures designed to adorn fireplace mantels and hearths, frequently depicting royal figures, military heroes, or equestrian themes.

These pieces were typically produced via sand-casting using brass alloys, featuring hollow or semi-flat backs, integrated base plinths, and hand-chased surface details added after the casting process.

Authentic period examples exhibit detailed low-relief casting, natural age-related oxidisation in recessed areas, hand-finished trim lines, and raised relief lettering or registry numbers on the base.

Arranging a symmetrical pair on a fireplace mantelpiece, bookshelf, or side console introduces warm metallic tones, historic narrative, and structured visual balance to contemporary rooms.

Dust regularly with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid abrasive chemical polishes if retaining the natural aged patina and dark oxidisation within the relief details is desired.
