What Are Antique Irons?
The heading covers the whole fireside department. Sets of fire irons, poker, shovel and tongs, are the largest single group in the listings, and fenders come next. Grates and fire baskets, andirons, firebacks, screens and guards, coal scuttles, and at the heavy end cast-iron ranges and fire surrounds all sit under it too.
The metal is iron, cast in about a quarter of titles and wrought in rather fewer, and it is usually paired with something brighter. Dating is mostly loose. The dated field runs from 1500 to 1940, but fewer than half the listings carry a clean year, and the rest sit under bracket labels. The bulk is 19th century, with Victorian in nearly three titles in ten; Georgian, Regency and Edwardian follow, then the 1910s and 1920s. Anything earlier than Georgian is exceptional, down to a single 15th-century pair of wrought-iron firedogs.
Where The Range Splits
Completeness does most of the work. Fire irons were made as sets and andirons as pairs, and listings say so plainly: set of three, poker shovel and tongs, a pair. A complete set, or better still a fender with matching dogs and irons, sits well above a single stray poker.
Then metal and finish. Plain black cast iron sits at the bottom of the range; polished steel, brass and bronze sit above it, and gilt-brass or ormolu chenets appear only at the top. A named design movement lifts a piece in the same way, with Arts and Crafts, Art Nouveau, Aesthetic Movement and Gothic Revival labels running across screens, fenders, andirons and scuttles.
Scale is the category's great variable. Large appears in a good many titles, heavy in a fair few, and the upper end reaches monumental: a club fender almost ten feet long, a fireback three feet tall, fire dogs 86cm high, and the occasional cast-iron cooking range. Among fenders, leather, mahogany or oak seating is the top of the range.
