This Arts and Crafts fire screen dates from 1890 and brings a traditional English Country House aesthetic to the hearth. The piece consists of a hand-hammered copper central panel mounted within a black wrought iron scrollwork frame, combining warm metallic tones with dark forged metal elements. The hammered copper panel displays a raised relief repousse shield crest design with floral embellishments at the top and base. The black wrought iron frame incorporates decorative scrollwork, curved side supports, an arched carrying handle with curled terminals, and four splayed feet. The screen measures 85 cm high by 60 cm wide by 30 cm deep overall. Placed in front of a fireplace hearth, this firescreen functions as a practical barrier when the fireplace is not in use while adding period character to a living room or study. The materials and construction reflect the hand-wrought ideals of the Arts and Crafts movement.

Originating in the late nineteenth century, Arts and Crafts fire screens emphasise hand craftsmanship, honest expression of materials, and decorative motifs inspired by nature or simplified heraldry, reacting against industrial mass production.

These screens typically feature hand-hammered copper or brass panels created using repousse and chasing techniques, set within hand-forged wrought iron frames with scrolled feet and carrying handles.

Authentic pieces exhibit subtle irregularities from hand-hammering, hand-riveted joints, planished surfaces, and authentic aged patina or oxidisation along the copper and ironwork.

Position the screen inside or directly in front of an unused fireplace hearth to create a decorative focal point, balancing minimalist modern lines with warm, textured metallic craftsmanship.

Dust regularly with a soft, dry cloth; avoid harsh chemicals or metal polishes that strip historical patina, applying a light coat of clear microcrystalline wax to protect against corrosion and tarnish.
