This pair of Victorian Neoclassical fire dogs originates from 1860, combining cast iron and brass with a contrasting black and polished golden colourway. Each accessory stands on three splayed legs terminating in hoof feet, supporting a square base adorned with a cast brass implement rest depicting crossed tools. Above sits a fluted brass urn finial flanked by ornate scroll handles, all contributing to the structured form and tactile finish typical of mid-nineteenth-century hearth metalwork. Measuring 46 cm high, 28 cm wide, and 25 cm deep, the set is designed to sit neatly within a fireplace hearth to hold logs or support companion sets. These items suit traditional or period-inspired living spaces, functioning as both decorative fireplace furniture and practical fireplace accessories.

Fire dogs, also known as andirons, were placed in pairs within open fireplaces to support wood logs above the hearth floor. Raising the fuel improved air circulation beneath the fire to burn more efficiently while preventing rolling logs from damaging the surrounding interior.

Victorian fire dogs were predominantly constructed using heavy cast iron bases to withstand direct heat and flame exposure, combined with decorative cast brass or bronze finials on the forward-facing posts to add ornate visual detail.

Authentic period pieces exhibit heavy, solid cast iron bases with visible casting seams or hand-finished joint work where brass elements attach. Genuine age is evidenced by surface oxidisation, minor soot residue in crevices, and authentic wear on the bottom surfaces that touch the hearth floor.

In modern interiors, fire dogs can be placed inside non-operational focal fireplaces flanked by stacked birch logs or decorative candles. Their mixed brass and dark iron palette complements modern hearth surrounds made of slate, marble, or polished concrete.

Cast iron components should be kept dry and periodically treated with black grate polish or light mineral oil to prevent rust oxidisation. Brass finials can be lightly buffed with a soft microfibre cloth and specialized metal polish to preserve shine without removing natural age patina.
