Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the 19th century, large open fireplaces in country houses relied on raised grates supported by andirons (fire dogs) to hold solid fuel. Elevating the logs allowed airflow underneath to feed oxygen to the flames while channeling ash downwards into the hearth pit.

Hearthware from this era was predominantly forged from wrought iron due to its high tensile strength and tolerance to extreme heat. Accents such as finials or polished decorative trims were frequently crafted from cast brass.

Authentic pieces exhibit visible signs of hand-forging, such as slight irregularities in the scrollwork, hammer marks, rivets, and joined iron bars rather than uniform modern machine welds. Natural surface oxidisation and wear from historic heat exposure are also typical indicators.

In modern living spaces, an antique fire grate can be installed inside an unlit decorative hearth or adapted with bioethanol burners or LED log inserts. Placing it central to an empty chimney breast adds structural weight and historical character.

Wrought iron should be kept dry to prevent rust and periodically treated with traditional blacking paste or microcrystalline wax. Brass finials can be gently polished with a soft cloth while preserving any historic natural patina in recessed areas.
