This pair of Victorian brass fire dogs dates from 1880 and brings classic fireplace accessories into the interior scheme. Each piece is cast in brass with a polished gold finish, displaying shaped turned finials with spiralled swirl tops above elegant cabriole legs. The design terminates in detailed paw feet, supported by an additional brass backfoot for stability. The construction exhibits clean moulded lines and traditional joinery typical of the period. Dimensions are 28 cm high, 15 cm wide, and 20 cm deep, making them suitable for standard domestic hearths. In a modern setting, position these accessories directly on the fireplace hearth to anchor traditional interiors or to add character to contemporary mantels.

Fire dogs, also known as andirons, are horizontal bracket supports used in pairs within a fireplace to hold burning logs off the hearth floor, improving airflow and draft.

Victorian fire dogs were typically cast from solid brass, iron, or bronze, often featuring decorative cast brass fronts attached to iron billet bars that extend into the hearth.

Authentic antique brass fire dogs display evidence of hand-threaded iron bolts, hand-finished casting seams, unrefined undersides, and natural surface patination or oxidisation in hard-to-reach crevices.

Antique fire dogs can be positioned inside a decorative hearth opening, paired with a modern fire basket, or displayed on a tiled hearth to introduce warmth and period character.

Maintain brass fire dogs by dusting regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and applying a specialised brass polish sparingly if a bright finish is required, avoiding harsh chemicals that strip patination.
