Fire irons are handheld tools used to adjust firewood and manage embers, while fire dogs (also known as andirons) are placed in pairs inside a hearth to elevate logs off the floor, allowing better airflow for combustion.

Turn-of-the-century hearth sets were commonly forged or cast from solid brass, iron, or steel, featuring lathe-turned detailing, urn-shaped finials, and decorative pierced metalwork on shovel blades.

Authentic period pieces display threaded mechanical joints, original casting seams, balanced substantial weight, and natural oxidisation or soot wear near the working ends.

Position the fire dogs symmetrically inside a stone or brick hearth opening and arrange the tools adjacent on an uncarpeted hearth stone to contrast clean modern architecture with historical metalwork.

Remove soot and surface dust with a soft, dry cloth and apply a specialised brass cleaner sparingly to maintain high shine while avoiding harsh abrasive pads that scratch historical surfaces.
