These large French fire dogs from 1850 are fireplace accessories in the French Rococo style, made of brass with a polished brass finish and a golden colour. Each piece stands upright on a wide scrolling base decorated with a central fleur-de-lis motif and cast details, rising through a turned stem to a gadrooned body and a fluted urn finial. The set measures 92 cm high, 39 cm wide, and 16 cm deep. Positioned on a fireplace hearth, this pair adds traditional ornamentation to a chimney breast. The items are useful for framing the hearth opening in a living room or study, bringing symmetrical metalwork to the fireplace setting.

French fire dogs, or chenets, originated as practical hearth tools designed to elevate burning logs off the fireplace floor to improve airflow and combustion. By the 17th and 18th centuries, particularly during the Louis XIV and Rococo eras, they evolved into decorative metalwork statements featuring classical urns, scrolls, and heraldic motifs like the fleur-de-lis.

Traditional fire dogs typically feature cast iron rear billets that extend into the hearth to sustain high heat, paired with cast or hand-chased brass front standards. The decorative brass fronts were often cast in sections using sand-moulding techniques and secured with threaded internal iron rods before being hand-polished.

Authentic period pieces usually show hand-cut threading on the internal assembly rods, subtle irregularities from manual casting, and natural oxidation or soot marks on the reverse side. The front brass work often displays hand-chased surface details, sharp moulding edges, and a heavy, solid construction compared to modern lightweight reproductions.

Brass fire dogs can be placed inside an inactive or modernised fireplace hearth to add architectural structure and warmth. They also function effectively in contemporary schemes as sculptural objects alongside minimal hearth tiles or paired with dark slate surrounds to highlight the reflective metallic finish.

Dust the surfaces regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth to prevent soot accumulation. To maintain a bright finish, apply a specialist brass polish sparingly with a soft cloth, avoiding abrasive pads that could scratch the metal surface or strip historic lacquers.
