Fire Fender Large Early 20th Century Country House Steel C1920

1900 - 1920
Description

A superb and highly decorative early 20th-century country house fire fender, beautifully constructed in heavy-gauge solid steel and possessing wonderful character, colour and patina.

Of particularly impressive proportions, the fender features elegant ornate scrollwork decoration, giving it a wonderfully traditional and architectural appearance. The beautifully worked steel combines strength and substance with flowing decorative detail, creating a striking piece of country house fireside furniture.

Constructed from substantial heavy-gauge steel, the fender has an excellent weight and reassuring solidity, reflecting the quality of traditional metalworking from the period.

Of particular note is the fantastic colour and naturally developed patina, with the aged steel displaying a wonderfully rich, mellow surface that gives the piece tremendous character and authenticity.

Its generous size and impressive proportions make it particularly suitable for a large fireplace or inglenook, where it would provide a handsome decorative feature while retaining its original practical purpose.

This early 20th-century country house fire fender dates to 1920 and follows a traditional Edwardian style. Constructed from heavy-gauge solid steel with a dark grey colour, the piece has an aged patina, tubular metal rails, and side returns decorated with elaborate scrollwork and S-scroll motifs. The visual details include circular wrought iron loops alternating with vertical serpentine bars along the front and side panels, creating an openwork frieze with raised corner finial profiles. Measuring 46 cm high, 183 cm wide, and 46 cm deep, this large fire fender sits on the hearth in front of an open fireplace in a period country house, farmhouse, or traditional interior. It serves to contain embers and logs while adding an architectural metalwork element to the hearth.

A steel fire fender is a low metal surround placed around the base of a fireplace hearth to contain ashes, embers, and coal dust. Popularised in large country houses during the 19th and early 20th centuries, these metal kerbs provided both functional safety and a decorative frame for large open fireplaces.

Early 20th-century fenders were typically forged from steel, wrought iron, or brass. Blacksmiths used traditional metalworking techniques such as hand-scrolling, riveting, and hot-bending to construct durable frames capable of withstanding high heat near open hearths.

Authentic period fire fenders often show signs of hand-forging, such as slight structural asymmetry, visible joinery or rivets, and surface patination from age and heat exposure. They tend to be heavier than modern reproductions and feature authentic oxidisation or dark graphite finishes rather than uniform powder coating.

Place the fender around a working or decorative fireplace hearth to ground the rooms central focal point. The dark steel aesthetic contrasts well with natural stone, brick, or tiled surrounds, complementing both traditional period schemes and modern industrial interior styling.

Keep the steel dry to prevent active corrosion or rust formation. Wipe the metalwork periodically with a soft cloth and apply a light coat of microcrystalline wax or traditional black grate polish to preserve the original surface texture and protect against moisture.
