This large Victorian fire screen comes from the nineteenth century in the English country house style. The construction combines warm brown mahogany with a textile canvas panel, finished with scroll-carved cresting, spiral barley twist columns at the sides and bottom stretcher, and a painted central needlework design featuring a colourful bouquet of red, blue, and purple floral motifs. The timber shows a polished finish with traditional wooden joints at the feet and frame. Measuring 96 cm high, 61 cm wide, and 18 cm deep, the screen stands on the floor in front of a fireplace hearth to block heat and drafts when a fire burns. Homeowners position it directly before the grate in a living room, drawing room, or study, where the decorative needlework panel and turned wooden elements add traditional character to the interior scheme.

Fire screens became prominent domestic fixtures during the 18th and 19th centuries, designed primarily to protect room occupants from intense heat and sparks generated by open hearth fires while preserving wax makeup worn at the time. During the Victorian era, they evolved into key decorative elements, often displaying hand-stitched needlework or painted silk panels framed in carved hardwoods.

Victorian fire screens were typically crafted using dense hardwoods such as solid mahogany, walnut, or rosewood for the framing and upright supports. Central panels were commonly executed in wool or silk needlepoint embroidery, beadwork, or painted canvas mounted onto wooden backings.

Authentic 19th-century examples display period-specific joinery, including hand-carved details, pegged joints, and natural irregular wear on turned elements like barley twist columns. The textile central panel should exhibit genuine hand-stitched construction with age-appropriate softening of vegetable dyes on the front compared to the reverse.

An antique fire screen can be positioned directly on the hearth of an unused fireplace alcove to conceal dark masonry while introducing texture and historical character. Alternatively, place it in an empty corner or beside an armchair to function as a freestanding sculptural art panel.

Maintain the timber frame by dusting regularly with a soft microfiber cloth and applying beeswax polish sparingly along the grain. Preserve the textile panel by keeping the screen situated away from direct sunlight, high humidity, and active heat sources, using a soft-bristled brush or low-suction vacuum attachment to gently remove surface dust.
