Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Victorian dummy board fire screen dates from around 1820 and originates from an English country house setting. Constructed from pine with a warm brown finish, the flat wooden panel is shaped with undulating silhouette edges and stands on integrated turned wooden feet. The hand-painted trompe l'oeil decoration depicts a woven basket overflowing with a colourful still life of red grapes, dark grapes, pale yellow grapes, pink roses, orange blossoms, and green foliage. Measuring 83 cm high by 74 cm wide, the surface retains its original painted finish with visible brushwork detail and natural signs of age. Placed beside a fireplace hearth, this decorative novelty adds a traditional accent to a living room or study interior.

FAQs

Originating in the 17th century and remaining popular through the 19th century, dummy boards are flat wooden cutouts painted in trompe loeil fashion, designed to stand in disused fireplaces or decorate interior rooms.

These decorative pieces were constructed from thin solid wood or joined pine boards, bevelled along the cutout edges, and finished with oil paint to achieve a three-dimensional visual appearance.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-carved edge moulding, signs of wood shrinkage along timber joins, original iron or wooden reverse supports, and age-appropriate paint craquelure.

A floral dummy board works effectively when set inside an unused fireplace hearth, placed on a hallway floor against neutral panelling, or displayed as floor-standing art in a reception room.

Dust the painted surface gently using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or brush, and keep the object away from moisture, heat, and direct sunlight to prevent wood warping and pigment cracking.
