Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian fire screen featuring a Berlin work panel. The mahogany and rosewood frame displays rich brown tones with surface scratches on the surround, turned uprights with ball finials, carved scroll cresting, and splayed feet with castors. The glazed panel encloses vibrant needlework depicting a bird among colourful red, pink, and blue flowers. The piece measures 122 cm high, 70 cm wide, and 48 cm deep at the feet. This freestanding firescreen is suited for placement on a fireplace hearth in a traditional living room, drawing room, or country house setting to shield a room from excess heat when a fire is not lit. The textile backing uses new silk to secure the needlework panel.

FAQs

A Victorian Berlin work fire screen is a piece of occasional furniture designed to shield room occupants from intense hearth heat while showcasing hand-embroidered woolwork patterns.

These screens typically feature carved mahogany or rosewood framing, protective glass, and wool embroidery stitched onto canvas using dyed yarns.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-turned wooden joinery, period-appropriate scrollwork, original glass glazing, and cross-stitch wool textiles showing characteristic age-related tone variations.

Place the screen adjacent to a fireplace hearth, within a chimney alcove, or as a decorative freestanding accent in a living area or hallway.

Keep the piece away from direct sunlight and dampness, clean the timber frame with a microfibre cloth, and ensure the textile remains sealed behind glass to prevent dust accumulation.
