Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1880s:
Punched ground behind the carved foliage: Victorian interpretation of earlier Irish designs.
Deeply undercut rope-twist moulding along the top: distinctive late nineteenth-century decorative work.
Boldly modelled claw and ball feet: classic late Victorian Chippendale revival shaping.
Warm surface patination across the top: decades of gentle household use.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This Victorian mahogany console hall table dates from around 1880 in the English Country House style. The dark brown timber has a polished finish with an attractive grain, complemented by a gadrooned rim along the rectangular top, a carved shell apron with scrolling foliage, and cabriole legs terminating in ball and claw feet. The piece stands 79.5 cm high, 125 cm wide, and 50.5 cm deep. Positioned beside the front door, in an entrance hall, drawing room or reception room, the table serves as a practical surface for displaying decorative objects, a pair of lamps, or an arrangement of flowers. It remains in very good antique condition with minor age-related wear consistent with its use.

Victorian console tables often feature elements inspired by earlier period movements, including Chippendale and Rococo revivals. Common design characteristics include cabriole legs, ornate aprons with carved shell or acanthus motifs, gadrooned borders, and ball and claw feet.

Dense solid hardwoods such as West Indian mahogany and Cuban mahogany were favoured for detailed carved furniture. Traditional joinery methods, such as mortise and tenon joints, were used alongside natural animal glues and hand-applied shellac or wax finishes.

Authentic period pieces display evidence of hand-carving with subtle variations in depth across carved motifs. Look for natural oxidisation on unpolished undersides, hand-planed timber surfaces, period-correct construction methods, and age-related wear around the feet and table rim.

Position the console table against a neutral or painted wall in an entryway or living room space. Pair the dark mahogany wood with a contemporary wall mirror, textured ceramic lamps, or modern artwork to create contrast between traditional timber and modern elements.

Dust regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth following the grain of the wood. Apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to preserve the timber patination, avoiding spray polishes containing silicone which can alter original finishes.
