This Edwardian nest of four tables from the late 19th century is made from warm brown mahogany with satinwood, kingwood, and plum pudding mahogany veneers. Each graduated table features a rectangular top with an oval centre panel, a crossbanded border, fine stringing, and a raised gallery. The side supports include turned spindles and shaped framing above concave stretchers and curved trestle feet with ebonised line details. Measuring 58.5 cm high, 49.5 cm wide, and 35.5 cm deep at the largest top, this set displays a polished timber finish with rich grain patterns and natural variation across the surfaces. In a modern home, these versatile nesting tables function well as occasional surfaces next to a sofa or armchair in a living room or study. The individual tables separate easily to hold drinks, books, or lamps, and stack together compactly when floor space is needed. The traditional English country house design suits both period properties and classic interior settings, offering practical surface space alongside decorative inlaid woodwork.

A nest of tables, historically referred to as a quartetto set when comprising four pieces, was first designed in the late eighteenth century and grew in popularity through the Regency and Edwardian periods as adaptable drawing room furniture.

Period examples were predominantly crafted from dense timbers like mahogany, satinwood, or rosewood, featuring lightweight turned spindle legs, stretcher rails for stability, and decorative crossbanded or oval marquetry top panels.

Authenticity is indicated by original hand-cut dovetail or mortise-and-tenon joints, hand-carved runners showing natural friction wear, matching grain patterns across the graduated tops, and uniform timber oxidisation on underside surfaces.

Position the tucked stack adjacent to an armchair or sofa end to function as a compact side table, sliding out the nested lower surfaces when entertaining guests or requiring extra surface area.

Position pieces away from direct heat sources and strong sunlight to protect the veneer from splitting or fading, applying a clear natural beeswax polish twice yearly along the timber grain and sliding tracks.
