Antique Embossed Leather Top Nest of 3 Tables

1900 - 1920
Description

A very interesting antique embossed leather top nest of tables, made in England & dating from around the 1910 period.

The leather tops depict Aztec or possibly Inca gods, they have exceptional details and are extremely well made. The frames are mahogany, with beautifully turned legs and serpentine shaped lower frieze edges.

The condition is excellent for their age, we have given them a clean and fresh wax polish.

I would date them to around the 1910-20’s period.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in the late eighteenth century and accredited to furniture designer Thomas Sheraton, nesting tables were created to offer flexible seating and surface options within compact living spaces. These graduating sets of tables slide beneath one another for storage and can be spread across a room when entertaining guests.

Traditional nesting tables are constructed from solid dense hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, or oak using mortise and tenon joinery. The top surfaces frequently feature inlaid hide leather that has been stamped, tooled, or embossed with decorative borders or central motifs, supported by slender turned legs and stretchers.

Authentic period pieces exhibit natural wear patterns, slight variations in timber grain, hand-cut joinery, and patination on both the wood finish and the leather surface. Genuine tooled leather tops display crisp impression lines from hand-stamping tools rather than modern uniform machine molding.

A nest of tables functions well placed at the end of a sofa or alongside an armchair, providing versatile surfaces for lamps and beverages. Designers often stagger the tables slightly rather than tucking them away completely, allowing the patterned tops and graduated timber heights to create visual interest.

Keep the set away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent timber warping and leather drying. Wipe the wood with a soft cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish periodically, while treating the embossed leather inset with specialized leather balm to preserve flexibility and color depth.
