Edwardian Mahogany Nest of Three Tables

1900 - 1920
For Sale by FB Antiques
Description

A charming set of three Edwardian mahogany graduated nesting tables, dating to approximately circa 1900–1910.

The three tables feature beautifully figured rich mahogany rectangular tops, each with an attractive moulded edge. The tables are supported by elegant slender turned mahogany legs, with decorative ring turning and joined by shaped lower stretchers.

The graduated design allows the three tables to nest neatly beneath one another when not in use, making them both decorative and highly practical. The warm mahogany colour and elegant proportions are typical of the refined furniture produced during the Edwardian period.

A versatile set that would work particularly well as occasional tables, lamp tables, side tables or serving tables in a traditional or period interior.

An Edwardian nest of three graduating rectangular tables constructed from warm brown mahogany timber with visible grain figuring. Each top has a moulded edge, supported by slender turned legs featuring ring turnings and bamboo reeding, joined by low stretchers terminating in splayed trestle feet. The tables measure 73 cm high, 48.5 cm wide and 30.5 cm deep, allowing the smaller tables to slide neatly beneath the largest one. This versatile set functions well in a traditional living room or period interior as an end of a sofa arrangement, side tables, lamp tables or serving tables when additional surface space is required.

First popularized in the late eighteenth century by cabinetmakers such as Thomas Sheraton, nests of tables became staple occasional furniture items through the Victorian and Edwardian eras. Designed to stack neatly together to preserve space, they offered portable surface area for entertaining and tea service in private residences.

Edwardian examples predominantly utilize dense timber choices such as mahogany, rosewood, and satinwood. Construction often highlights slender turned or faux-bamboo wooden legs, lightweight frame joinery, and veneered or solid molded top surfaces.

Authentic Edwardian nests generally feature delicate, refined proportions compared to heavier Victorian counterparts. Look for hand-cut joinery beneath the tabletop aprons, original patina on the timber, uniform hand-turned spindle leg detailing, and subtle wear along the inner runner channels where the smaller tables slide into place.

A set of nested tables can be arranged together beside a sofa or armchair as a compact side unit, or separated across a seating area when entertaining guests. Their slender silhouette pairs easily alongside contemporary upholstered seating without visually cluttering the room.

Dust surfaces regularly using a clean, soft microfibre cloth following the direction of the wood grain. Protect the polish by placing coasters under hot or wet drinks and apply a beeswax polish sparingly once or twice a year to maintain the timber finish.
