Antique Oak Drop Leaf Gate Leg Table

Description

An antique oak gate leg table. The table has a rectangular-shaped top with two drop leaves to either side; when extended, this creates a larger oval-shaped surface. The leaves are supported by two gate legs. To one end, there is a short drawer fitted with a neat brass drawer pull. The base consists of eight turned legs with straight stretcher supports. A charming example with good colour throughout.

This 19th-century English Country dining table is constructed from dark brown oak and brass. The rectangular top has two hinged drop leaves which expand the surface when raised. Eight heavily turned baluster legs sit upon low box stretchers and ball feet, supporting the gate-leg frame. A single drawer occupies one end, fitted with a brass swan-neck handle on a shaped backplate. Surface wear includes age-related marks, fading, and stains across the timber top. Measuring 73 cm high, 42 cm wide, and 95.5 cm deep when closed, the piece serves well as a compact side table or writing desk in a hallway, study, or living room. Fully opened, it provides a functional dining or display surface for daily family life in a traditional interior.

FAQs

Originating in England during the late sixteenth century, the gateleg table is a form of drop-leaf furniture designed with pivoting legs connected by stretchers.
