This seventeenth-century gate leg dining table uses solid oak with a dark brown waxed finish and an aged patina. The piece includes an oval top formed from a central section and two drop-leaf flaps, supported by bobbin turned legs and a box stretcher base. A small single drawer sits beneath the tabletop, fitted with a dark round knob. When fully opened, the top measures 106 cm by 117 cm with a height of 72 cm, providing practical surface area for daily use. Such a table suits a traditional dining room or a rustic kitchen setting, functioning well for family meals or as a sideboard surface against a wall when the leaves are folded down.

A gateleg table is a type of drop-leaf table featuring hinged legs, known as gates, that swing outward to support raised side flaps. First popularised in England during the 16th and 17th centuries, this design provided flexible dining solutions for compact living spaces.

Typically crafted from solid native timbers such as English oak, these tables feature mortise and tenon joinery secured with wooden pegs. Leg supports often display hand-turned bobbin or baluster profiles anchored by heavy stretchers near the base for structural stability.

Authentic 17th-century examples display irregular hand-planed surfaces, pegged joints without modern metal screws, and natural wear on the lower stretchers. Original oak exhibits deep oxidisation and age-related shrinkage across wide plank tops.

A gateleg table functions as a versatile dining table or console piece when folded against a wall. Pair it with modern seating or minimalist ceramics to highlight the contrast between clean contemporary lines and historic timber.

Maintain historic oak by dusting with a soft cloth and applying a clear beeswax polish periodically along the grain. Keep the table away from direct heat sources and maintain stable humidity levels to prevent timber warping or splitting.
