This Jacobean dining table from the seventeenth century is constructed from dark brown oak with a drop leaf design and a stretcher base. The piece includes a fitted drawer with a brass teardrop pull handle, a shaped frieze along the apron, and turned legs terminating in rounded feet. Rule joints remain intact along the leaves. It seats six to eight people when fully extended. Measuring 71 cm high by 122 cm wide and 140 cm deep when open, the table folds down to a depth of 47 cm when closed. In a contemporary home, this English country house dining table suits a traditional dining room or a spacious kitchen as a gathering surface. The dark timber finish brings warmth to daily meals or family gatherings, accommodating large groups when both leaves are raised. The drop leaf construction allows the unit to stand compactly against a wall when floor space is needed, while the single drawer provides practical storage for dining linens or small tableware accessories.

A gateleg table is a form of drop-leaf table introduced in the 16th and 17th centuries, featuring pivoting leg assemblies hinged on stretchers that swing outward like gates to support extended table leaves.

These tables were constructed primarily from solid English oak, joined using mortise and tenon joinery secured with wooden pegs, and often featured turned legs and hand-forged iron or brass hardware.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-planed oak surfaces, irregular peg joinery, hand-carved friezes or baluster-turned legs, historical wear on the stretchers, and traditional wooden drawer runners.

Position the table in a dining area or broad hallway, pairing the dark oak timber with neutral linen upholstery, contemporary lighting, or structured ceramics to complement the historical woodwork.

Maintain the finish by dusting regularly with a soft cloth, applying a high-quality beeswax polish twice yearly along the wood grain, and keeping the timber clear of direct heat sources or damp conditions.
