Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A gateleg table is a form of drop-leaf furniture featuring hinged leaves supported by pivoting leg structures that swing out like gates. First developed in England during the 16th century, these versatile tables provided flexible dining options for various living spaces.

Traditional gateleg tables were predominantly crafted from solid dense hardwoods, most commonly English oak or walnut. Construction methods relied on traditional joinery, including hand-cut mortise and tenon joints, wooden dowels, turned legs, and forged iron hinges.

Authentic period gateleg tables display characteristics such as hand-planed timber surfaces, slight irregularities in turned legs, and historic wear on the lower stretchers. Original iron hinges, hand-cut joinery, and natural wood shrinkage around table joints also indicate period origin.

An antique oak gateleg table works as a central dining surface or as a side table when folded down. Combining dark patinated oak timber with modern dining chairs or contemporary ceramics creates a balanced contrast between historic woodwork and clean modern lines.

Maintain antique oak by wiping surfaces regularly with a soft, dry cloth and applying clear beeswax polish once or twice per year. Position the piece away from direct radiators and prolonged sunlight to prevent wood shrinkage, warping, or deterioration of the natural patina.
