Oak Gateleg Table Late 17th Century (Charles Ii)

17th century
For Sale by M Cross Antiques
Description

A delightful late 17th-century oak gateleg table with an oval-shaped top, two drop leaves and a drawer to one end. The gates and legs are united by stretchers, with both having ball-knopped baluster legs and terminating on ball feet.

The overall condition is extremely solid with no rot or worm damage present. One small ring mark to the top and other age-related wear and tear, as is to be expected with a much-loved table of this age.

A stylish example of its type and still a useful item in the modern home.

This late seventeenth-century Charles II oak gateleg table has an oval top formed of a plank surface with two drop leaves, supported by turned ball-knopped baluster legs united by box stretchers and terminating in ball feet. The dark brown timber shows age-related surface wear including a small ring mark on the top, along with a drop leaf mechanism. The table stands 70 cm high, 43 cm wide and 107 cm deep. In a modern interior, this dining table provides a practical surface for meals or display in a dining room, kitchen or living space, combining period character with everyday usability.

A Charles II gateleg table is a drop-leaf design originating from late seventeenth-century England, featuring hinged leg frames that swing outwards to support extended table flaps.

These tables were crafted from solid English oak using traditional pegged mortise-and-tenon joinery, hand-turned baluster legs, and heavy box stretchers for structural stability.

Authentic pieces feature hand-planed undersides, hand-forged iron hinges, asymmetrical wooden peg joinery, and natural wear patterns along the lower stretchers.

It serves as an adaptable dining solution or console table, with leaves that collapse to minimise footprint while offering historical texture in contemporary schemes.

Preserve the timber surface by applying a high-grade beeswax polish annually, wiping spills immediately, and placing the table away from direct radiators or moisture source variations.
