This pair of occasional tables dates from 1920 in the Rococo Revival style, fashioned from gilt wood and glass with combined gold and silver finishes. Each low, ornate piece presents a shaped inset glass top held within a moulded frame, supported by sculptural scroll legs and a shaped apron with parcel gilding. The visual composition blends metallic tones with intricate curved woodwork. Measuring 45 cm high by 80 cm wide and 80 cm deep, each table fits neatly into a living space. Position these tables at the end of a sofa or beside seating in a French Chateau inspired interior. The low profile works well for holding drinks or display items within reach, while the reflective glass tops and metallic surfaces catch the ambient light of the room. The decorative legs and scrolled woodwork provide a distinct focal point without obstructing sightlines across the floor.

Rococo-style gilt wood furniture typically features scrolling acanthus leaves, asymmetrical curves, and shell motifs, originating in eighteenth-century Europe as a reaction against heavy Baroque symmetry.

These pieces are constructed from carved timber frames, coated with a gesso base, and finished with gold or silver leaf application, frequently paired with protective glass surfaces.

Authentic water or oil gilding displays subtle wear showing red or grey clay bolus beneath, along with natural oxidisation, seam lines between individual leaf squares, and slight variations in surface sheen.

Placing gilded tables alongside modern neutral upholstery creates balanced visual contrast, allowing metallic finishes to function as reflective accent elements against understated fabrics.

Gilded wood surfaces should be dusted gently with a soft, dry microfibre feather duster without chemical cleaners, while inset glass panels can be removed and cleaned separately.
