French Occasional Table

19th century

A very attractive early 10th Century French occasional table, with a marble top that has an ormolu surround. It also has two lower shelves. We suggest that it would be possible for one to show off three different flower arrangements at one time.

This nineteenth-century French occasional table stands as a tall multi-tiered stand crafted in the Louis XV style, combining dark brown polished wood with rich gold-coloured mounts. The piece incorporates a marble inset top featuring mottled brown and reddish tones, enclosed by an ornate cast ormolu rim with decorative scrolling edge details. Slender cabriole legs curve downwards to terminate in small brass-toned sabots, while chased gilt-bronze mounts embellish the upper leg joins beneath the apron. Two matching lower wooden shelves with shaped edges and brass banding provide additional display surfaces, connected by a central upright support column that extends to the floor. Measuring 98 cm high by 30 cm wide and 30 cm deep, the stand offers a compact vertical footprint suitable for placement in an empty corner, hallway or reception room. The tiered arrangement creates display capacity for decorative items or flower arrangements across multiple levels within interior spaces.

Popularised in nineteenth-century France, these compact tables feature multiple tiers designed to hold small decorative objects or plants, often incorporating slender cabriole legs and Rococo proportions.

Fine examples typically utilise hardwood frameworks faced with timber veneers such as rosewood or mahogany, embellished with cast gilt-bronze mounts and inset marble tops.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-chased gilt-bronze mounts fitted with period-appropriate screws, hand-shaped veneer undertones, and natural wear patterns along lower shelf edges.

Position the table beside an armchair or in a compact nook, using the top marble surface for drinks or lighting while arranging ceramics or books on the lower shelves.

Dust regularly with a soft dry cloth, apply natural beeswax polish to the timber while avoiding metal mounts, and clean spills off the marble surface immediately to prevent etching.
