1920 - 1940
For Sale by Limited Editions
Description

This is an impressive little table from South West France. In Walnut and other woods, all the timbers are in place and the inlays are complete. The lovely little gallery is all there as are the mountings on the legs. An item that has clearly not be abused in the the last 100years or so.

Colour is good with no obvious light fade and the French polish is good, certainly better than might expect for its age. A useful occasional table that could fit into most surroundings. Dont hesitate to give us a call to diiscuss.

This French occasional table from 1930 is executed in the Louis XV style and constructed from walnut and other timbers finished in a warm brown French polish. The piece comprises two hexagonal tiers decorated with geometric parquetry inlay, each bordered by a pierced brass gallery. Ormolu mounts adorn the shoulders of the slender cabriole legs, adding metallic contrast to the timber surfaces. The timbers remain complete with intact inlays, and the polish retains an even tone without obvious fading. The table measures 90 cm high, 47 cm wide, and 47 cm deep. Placed at the end of a sofa or in a reception room, it provides functional display space for lighting or decorative objects while complementing traditional interior schemes.

Tiered occasional tables evolved in 18th-century France as highly adaptable furniture pieces known as gueridons or etageres. Designed with multi-level surfaces, they allowed hosts to display decorative items, light sources, or refreshments while maintaining a compact footprint within formal reception rooms.

These tables are traditionally constructed from fine hardwoods such as walnut, kingwood, or tulipwood, decorated with geometric parquetry or floral marquetry veneers. The edges are framed with pierced cast brass or bronze galleries, and the legs are frequently adorned with cast metal mounts and sabots.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-cut timber veneers, pegged joinery, and heavy cast brass or ormolu mounts held in place with old slotted screws. Natural patination on both the timber finish and oxidized metal surfaces also signals genuine age and historical wear.

A two-tier table serves as an elegant accent beside an armchair or sofa, offering two levels for books and modern table lamps. The intricate woodwork and metallic trim contrast well with clean-lined contemporary upholstery and neutral colour palettes.

Dust the surfaces regularly using a soft, dry microfibre cloth, following the grain of the wood inlay. Apply a high-grade clear beeswax polish sparingly to protect the timber finish, ensuring polish does not build up inside the pierced metal galleries or brass mounts.
