This Victorian maritime desk ornament takes the form of a miniature signal cannon resting upon a stepped wooden carriage. The cast metal barrel displays a bright gold-coloured finish with raised circumferential mouldings running along its length towards a flared muzzle and a rounded cascabel at the rear. The dark brown carriage features a stepped profile, a trunnion cap, and four small turned brass wheels with central hubs that support the artillery piece. The object measures 10 cm high, 25 cm wide, and 11 cm deep. Placement suits a gentleman's library or study desk as an ornamental display piece. The model fits well upon a writing desk, a bookcase shelf, or a side table within a home office. Collectors of nautical instruments, maritime history artefacts, and desk ornaments use such items to add character to a workspace. The combination of polished metal and dark wood surfaces provides a traditional decorative accent for interior display.

Signal cannons were utilised aboard ships and at naval stations to give audio signals, salute arriving vessels, or sound alarms rather than for combat engagement. Scaled desktop models were later produced as commemorative items, paperweights, or decorative ornaments representing maritime history.

These models typically feature cast brass or bronze barrels mounted onto stepped wooden carriages, often crafted from hardwoods such as mahogany or oak. The carriages incorporate metal fittings, axles, and turned wheels called trucks to replicate full-sized naval gun carriages.

Authentic pieces display signs of age such as natural patination on the metal, hand-finished casting seams, correct historical proportions, and wear on the wooden carriage where moving components meet. Examining the touchhole and bore depth also indicates whether the piece was functional or purely ornamental.

Position the piece on a dark wood executive desk, a library bookshelf, or a mantelpiece to add a nautical accent. It pairs effectively with framed historic maps, leather-bound books, and brass instruments in a traditional study setting.

Dust the wooden carriage regularly with a dry soft cloth and apply a microcrystalline wax periodically to preserve the timber. Avoid harsh metal abrasive cleaners on the barrel if a historical patina is desired, as over-cleaning removes natural surface oxidisation.
