Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE GEORGIAN ERA:
Slender turned legs ending in pad feet: Georgian cabinet work before straight square legs.
Rule joint along the drop-leaf edge: seamless hinge design for folding leaves.
Deeply coloured solid mahogany top: dense timber favoured in earlier furniture.
Small brass keyhole surround on the frieze: cast fitting set flush into the timber.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This George II period side table dates from the Georgian era and is constructed from mahogany with a warm brown timber colour and a polished finish. The design incorporates a rectangular top with a single drop leaf supported by swing-out legs on a double gate action, a cross-grain frieze, turned legs, and pad feet. The wood grain shows natural variations in tone across the top and sides. Measuring 70 cm high, 81 cm wide, and 42 cm deep when closed, the table suits placement as an end-of-a-sofa piece or occasional surface in a living room, hallway, or bedroom within an English country house interior.

George II period furniture, dating from 1727 to 1760, is characterized by the extensive use of solid mahogany, balanced proportion, and features such as turned or cabriole legs terminating in pad or claw-and-ball feet.

These pieces were primarily constructed from solid dense mahogany, frequently utilizing secondary woods such as oak or pine for internal drawer linings and framing components, alongside wrought iron or brass hinges.

Authentic pieces display hand-sawn timber marks, hand-cut dovetail or mortise and tenon joinery, historical patination on untouched surfaces, and period-correct iron drop-leaf support mechanisms.

A single drop-leaf table functions as a compact side table beside seating, a versatile hall console with the leaf lowered against a wall, or an occasional drinks surface in living spaces.

Keep the wood away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent drying or splitting, dust regularly with a soft dry cloth, and apply beeswax polish sparingly once a year following the natural grain.
