FAQs

A Georgian tilt-top table is an 18th-century accent table featuring a hinged top that tilts vertically when not in use. This design allowed the piece to be stored against a wall to maximise floor space in period drawing rooms.

These tables were predominantly crafted from solid mahogany or walnut, supported by a turned central pillar and a tripod leg base. The tops frequently included carved rim details, such as piecrust or molded edges, attached to a wooden catch mechanism.

Authentic period examples feature hand-carved decorative elements, original iron or brass catches beneath the top, and hand-cut joinery on the block mechanism. The timber typically exhibits natural surface patination and subtle wood contraction marks across the grain.

Position the table alongside an armchair as an occasional drink surface, or store it with the top tilted vertically in a room corner to display the timber grain and carved edge profile.

Position the table away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent timber warping or splitting. Dust regularly with a soft cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish periodically to protect the finish.
