This George I period oak side table demonstrates English country house style in dark brown timber with a rich patina. The planked top overlaps the base containing a long shallow drawer fitted with brass swan neck drop handles, a pierced brass lock escutcheon, and a moulded waist. Slender turned legs stand on original turned feet and join via box stretchers on all four sides. The piece measures 67.5 cm high, 78.5 cm wide, and 43 cm deep. Practical placement includes positioning the table in an empty corner, hallway, or living space to serve as a surface for lamps, books, or decorative objects while providing concealed storage within the frieze drawer.

A George I side table, dating from the early 18th century, is characterised by restrained proportions, solid timber construction such as oak or walnut, turned legs, and practical single or multiple drawer configurations.

Craftsmen during the George I period primarily used native English oak and walnut, secured with hand-cut dovetail joints, wood peg mortise-and-tenon framing, and cast brass hardware.

Authentic 18th-century oak tables exhibit evidence of hand-planing on undersides, asymmetrical wear on stretchers, hand-cut dovetail joinery inside drawers, and natural patination around brass fittings.

An antique oak side table functions effectively as a hall table in an entryway, an occasional lamp table beside upholstered seating, or a compact desk in a home office.

Period oak furniture should be dusted regularly with a soft cloth and conditioned periodically with clear beeswax polish to protect the surface finish and maintain timber stability.
